Aurora motel: Drugs, violence, Harborview, jail

Submitted by KOMO Staff on Monday, March 1st, 09:50am

A man who fought off police officers at an Aurora hotel was taken to Harborview for a suspected drug overdose.

Police responded to a 911 call of a 28 year-old woman being physically and sexually assaulted in the hallway of a hotel in the 8200 block of Aurora Avenue North at 9:14 p.m. Sunday night.

Police arrived to find a hostile, combative 49 year-old man who refused arrest. Once officers got him under control, they took him outside to the police car.

But since they suspected the man had overdosed on drugs, they had Seattle Fire Department medics take him to Harborview.

An officer is guarding the suspect, who will be booked into the King County Jail upon release.

The woman sustained minor injuries.  Neither she nor the involved officers required medical treatment.  Police are investigating.

Greenlake fire victim identified

Submitted by Martha Kang on Tuesday, February 16th, 11:39pm

The man who was killed in a fire at a public housing complex in Seattle's Greenlake neighborhood has been identified.

Alfonso Goldwire, 71, was killed on Monday when a blaze broke out at the Green Lake Plaza, according to the King County Medical Examiner's Office. Goldwire died of thermal burns to 100-percent of his body, as well as toxic asphyxia due to inhalation of toxic products, officials said.

Goldwire was found inside his seventh-floor unit of the 11-story complex. Flames shot out the unit's windows and sent plumes of black smoke billowing out into the outside air.

"I feel so bad. He was such a nice man. You couldn't ask for a nicer man," said a neighbor named Shanda.

More than 100 firefighters responded and extinguished the 2-alarm fire in about half an hour, Seattle fire spokesperson Helen Fitzpatrick said.

No one else was injured in the fire. Many residents left the building on their own, but some were able to remain inside.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, and the investigation is ongoing.

One dead in fatal fire at public housing complex

Submitted by KOMO Staff on Monday, February 15th, 02:59pm

One person has been killed in a fire at an apartment building in Seattle's Greenlake neighborhood on Monday.

The blaze broke out at approximately1:30 p.m. in a seventh-floor unit at the 11-story Green Lake Plaza, Seattle fire spokesperson Helen Fitzpatrick said.

Flames shot out the unit's windows and sent plumes of black smoke billowing out into the outside air.

More than 100 firefighters responded and extinguished the 2-alarm fire in about half an hour, Fitzpatrick said.

Crews found the body of the deceased occupant in the damaged apartment. The victim's identity has not been released, but neighbors believe a disabled, wheelchair-bound man in his 70s fell victim to the flames.

"I feel so bad. He was such a nice man. You couldn't ask for a nicer man," said a neighbor named Shanda.

One investigator said another resident may have been in the room with him when flames took over.

No one else was injured in the fire. Many residents left the building on their own, but some were able to remain inside.

The case of the fire has not been determined, and the investigation is ongoing.

SUV crashes, suspect assaults cop

Submitted by KOMO Staff on Wednesday, February 10th, 06:57am

Investigators are looking for a man who crashed an SUV during a chase early Wednesday morning and assaulted a police officer.

Officials said the incident began about 12:45 a.m. when the officer tried to pull the driver over for a traffic violation near the intersection of North 90th and Aurora Avenue North.

The driver refused to stop and sped away. Officers said the chase was quickly called off, but the fleeing driver crashed into a house a few blocks away.

The man tried to run and the officer chased him down. Officials said the man punched the female officer in the face and tried to take her gun.

She continued to chase the man, but he got away.

The officer was taken to a hospital to be checked out and was expected to recover.

Officers searched the area using a police dog, but the man, who is in his 20s, remains at large. No detailed description was available.

The people inside the home where the SUV crashed were not injured.

Greg Roberts was watching TV when the vehicle smashed through a wall just a few feet from where he was sitting.

Help choose Seattle's top cop

Submitted by KOMO Staff on Tuesday, February 9th, 03:03pm

Mayor McGinn is picking a new top cop to replace Gil Kerlikowske, who was appointed the nation's drug czar, and it's time to put in your two cents.

At 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10, at Northgate Community Center, 10510 5th Ave NE, there will be the first of three public hearings devoted to the city's search for a new police chief.

The search committee wants to know:

  • What qualities are you looking for in a new police chief?
  • What is the most important public safety issue in Seattle?
  • What does the Seattle Police Department do well?
  • What changes would you like to see?

You can also call 206-684-CITY (206-684-2489) and leave your answers to these questions. Mayor McGinn will appoint a new chief in June subject to City Council approval.

Grab-n-Go Bandit stole for heroin money, police say

Submitted by KOMO Staff on Monday, February 8th, 10:46am

The man police dubbed the "Grab-N-Go Bandit" stole to support his heroin habit, investigators say.

Guy Aaron Ferguson, 25, was living at his parents' Phinney Ridge house last month and stole for drug money, Casey McNerthney at the P-I, our media partner, reports.

The above image was captured by surveillance video after Ferguson allegedly robbed a grocery story in the 10200 block of Aurora Avenue North Jan. 18.

Police reports say Ferguson asked the clerk for a pack of Marlboro cigarettes. When the clerk put the cigarettes on the counter the suspect put his hand behind his back suggesting that he was armed with a gun.

He then walked behind the counter and grabbed money from the register, according to police. They circulated the image from the surveillance video, hoping for tips from people who might have seen him.

But police spotted Ferguson themselves about a week ago and chased him down near the 100 block of NE 85th St.

One arrested in pellet gun target practice on Aurora

Submitted by KOMO Staff on Monday, February 8th, 09:56am

Police arrested a man for shooting a pellet gun from a rooftop over Aurora early this morning.

Officers responded to a call of what was believed to be rifle shots coming from the roof of a business in the 8900 block of Aurora Avenue North at about 12:30 a.m. Monday.

They found four people on the roof of the business, apparently shooting a pellet rifle toward Aurora.  Officers took three of the people into custody but one tried to run away so they arrested him.

At the North Precinct, one of the men claimed sole responsibility for the firing of the pellet gun. He said that he was shooting the gun at business signs across Aurora, and did not think he had struck any cars or people.

There were no reports of anyone claiming any injuries as a result of this incident.  The 26 year-old man was booked into the King County Jail for unlawful use of a weapon, while the other three men were interviewed and released.  The pellet gun was submitted into evidence.

Photo: Have you seen the "grab-n-go bandit?"

Submitted by KOMO Staff on Thursday, January 21st, 11:44am

Police are looking for this man, shown in surveillance video, who robbed a grobery story in the 10200 block of Aurora Avenue North Jan. 18.

He asked the clerk for a pack of Marlboro cigarettes.  When the clerk put the cigarettes on the counter the suspect put his hand behind his back suggesting that he was armed with a gun.

The man then walked behind the counter and grabbed money from the register. Robbery detectives believe that he is responsible for five other commercial robberies in the North Precinct, with the first one having occurred on January 5th.  He is considered armed and dangerous.

If you've seen this man or know where he might be, call 911 or the Seattle Police Robbery Unit at 206- 684-5535.
