Seattle: It's all Greek to me? | Community Spirit

Think about it: If Poseidon and Hermes were going to settle down anywhere in the New World, what city would fit them better than Seattle?

That's the question Daytona Strong with the Taproot Theatre Company posed to us this week.

Because Strong is the Communications Manager for Taproot - the driving force behind the pitch was to promote the theatre's upcoming performance of The Odyssey.

But her spin on a standard press release got us thinking...is she onto something?

I took my camera on a treasure hunt of sorts, to find the city's not-so-hidden references to Odyssey-related and Greek mythology.

Strong suggests that our water city would be perfect for Poseidon, and as a messenger - Hermes would adapt to the tech-savvy culture.

Perhaps they would reside in the Athena Condos in Queen Anne, and spend a rainy afternoon inside the Cyclops Café and lounge in Belltown.

The Starbucks Siren would make them feel right at home - and Hermes could shop at a store of the same name in Bellevue.

How corny is this - and I'm just getting started!

When they move to the 'burbs, side-by-side houses on a little street in Rainier Beach called Itaca Place South might be the best fit. Like modern-day Seattleites, they might enjoy a Helios beer at Elysian before watching "homers" at Safeco Field.

And it ain't Mount Olympus, but our Olympic Mountains should suffice.

"When you start to see these references - it's like trivia," Strong said.

Hey - there's an idea! We all know Seattle loves a good trivia night.

And on a serious note - Seattle also loves a good play.

But Strong says you shouldn't take Taproot's take on The Odyssey TOO seriously.

"It's a really really fun, adventurous and theatrical performance," she explained.
